Tsu' Chu is the earliest documented version of soccer, dating to the 3rd century B.C. It was a Chinese military exercise that improved soldiers' coordination by requiring them to kick a leather ball into a small net while fending off their opponents. Soccer has been popular in Europe since Medieval times, despite repeated attempts to ban the sport by nobles and clergy who viewed it as a frivolous and violent pursuit. Modern soccer was established on Oct. 26, 1863, when England's Football Association formally codified soccer's rules.

Soccer is played on a pitch, a rectangular field with goal nets at each end. Each team has 10 players on the field to advance the ball and one to keep goal. Players aren't permitted to use their hands or arms to handle the ball unless they're keeping goal. A match lasts for 90 minutes plus any additional time the referee elects to add to make up for game stoppages. The team that scores the most goals by sending the ball into their opponent's net wins the match.

The World Cup has been held every four years since 1930, aside from a 12-year interruption between 1938 and 1950 caused by World War II and events preceding and following it. The first tournament was held in Uruguay and over its 80-year history, only seven different nations have won the World Cup. Global marketing agency Interpublic Group's Initiative estimated that each 2010 World Cup match would attract 125 million viewers worldwide.
